Theologos
The
history of Theologos begins from ancient times. A settlement and a
necropolis where discovered on the route between Potos and Theologos,
dated before the settling of the Parians on the island (before the 8th
century A.D.).
Until the
half of the past century, Theologos was the head-village of the island,
while today, contrary to the rest of the mountain villages, it remains
lively and with many residents.
It
got its name during the Byzantine era, though it was inhabited earlier
than that. At that time it was the capital of Thassos, as it was later
on, in the years of the Turkish occupation. After the liberation, the
circumstances differ, piracy was successfully enfaced, mass tourism
flourishes and Theologos looses its importance and primacy in the
island’s political setting.
It is built in a beautiful location, despite the fact that the rocky schist stone soil makes it “rough” to the visitors' eyes. In deed, after the great fire of 1989 (and the soil displacement caused by the intense rain of the following winter) the area was striped of all the pine trees that covered everything, and as a result, the village appears a sad image, resting among the rocks. Never the less, the abundance of water in the area promises that nature will be reborn, giving Theologos its old beauty.
As being a rich village, its people build illustrious houses of unique architecture. Such is the mansion of Eleni Tziata, the homestead of the author Vasilis Vasilikos and the mansion of Xatzigiorgi that hosts the cultural club. In 1979 the Greek government declared Theologos a classic settlement, disregarding the intense protests of its residents. Over the last years many of the village houses, unable to be restored by their owners because of that decision, were sold to foreigners, mostly Germans and English.
Today the village is known for the offer of qualitative food (the most famous recipe is the broached goat), while in late June there is a representation of a Traditional Wedding.
