Thassos, MythologyAccording to Greek mythology, the first inhabitant and founder of the island, was a namesake man called Thassos. Thassos was either the son or the grandson of Aginoras, King of Phoenicia, who turned up in Thassos while trying to find Europa who had been kidnapped by Zeus in virtue of his passionate love.

Hellenistic Era

Thassos, Hellenistic EraAfter the entry in the 2nd Athenian Confederacy in 377 BC, the Thassians used the support of Athens to extend their influence in the main land. In 357 or 340 BC, King Philippos of Macedonia expands in the neighbouring area. Under the kingship of the Macedonians, Thassos maintains a part of its autonomy.

Thassos, Roman EraDuring the years of Macedonia’s obscurity, Thassos becomes the devoted concomitant of Rome. In spite of this loyalty, this had as a result its cruel besiege. After Rome’s’ victory, Thassos turned against Macedonia.
